Trewithen Dairy's New Cardboard Milk Bottle
Friday, 11 February 2011
A new milk bottle that could replace all plastic ones has been launched by Trewithen Dairy of Lostwithiel. The "GreenBottle" is made of a compostable, recyclable cardboard outer and uses just a third of the plastic in conventional bottles. It is being piloted in Cornish Asda stores.
The £7m project is a joint venture between Trewithen, Asda and GreenBottle of Suffolk whose Andy Brent pioneered the technology.
"Every year we use plastic bottles worth around £50m and which cost us £100m to dispose of - mostly to landfill", said Andy Brent. "These new bottles have the potential for huge economic and environmental savings".
The packaging gives equal strength to that of conventional bottles and retails at the same price.
