| The Cornwall Food Programme (CFP) is a commitment from the five Cornwall Healthcare National Health Service trusts to provide fresh healthy food for patients and to support local suppliers, growers and producers. Over the past five years the CFP has enabled Royal Cornwall Hospital to increase its procurement of quality local produce through Cornish suppliers to £400,000 which is about 40% of its food and drink budget. This has enabled many suppliers to expand, developing business opportunities and increasing the local workforce. In addition, another 40% of budget is spent with Cornish companies supplying nationally sourced products which ensures the benefit of contracts contributes to the cornish economy, minimises food miles and results in less packaging. Plans are underway to develop a Cornish Food Production Unit at Camborne to replace the catering facilities located in the Royal Cornwall Hospital and which will then service all the county's NHS facilities. The Cornwall Food Programme was "highly recommended" for its work in sustainable development in the Health Service Journal awards and the Building Better Healthcare awards. |
