Ales of Scilly
Established in 2001, Ales of Scilly is the most South Westerly brewery in Britain and uses Southwest barley and English hops to produce nine traditional style beers, some of which are speciality or seasonal ales. Originally producing up to 18 casks a week from an old barn, Ales of Scilly moved to more modern, larger premises in 2007 and now brew up to 50 casks a week. The brewery was set up as a part time labour of love by local teacher Mark Praeger but was taken over in 2017 by new owner Jen Trevithick.
On-line sales of bottled beers available.
The brewery’s range of ales are all named after ships which came to grief off the Isles.
Schiller. A golden ale of 3.8% ABV which is perfect for lunchtime drinking. Named after a wreck of 1875 when only 37 survived from 372.
Association is a floral IPA of strength 4.5% ABV. The Association was the British fleet flagship which sank in 1707 along with three other boats for a total loss of 2,000 souls.
T W Lawson is the name given to Ales of Scilly’s Porter with an ABV of 4.5% and is a smooth easy drink. It is named after the loss of the TW Lawson which went down in 1907 with 90 million litres of paraffin and all but two of the crew.
