Knightor Winery and Restaurant
Knightor make premium quality, limited production wines from grapes grown in English vineyards and their own vines at Portscatho and Seaton on the south Cornish coast.
A relatively hands-off approach to winemaking is taken. Although inspiration is taken from both old and new world, there is no desire to mimic. With English wine the difference is generally the lightness and elegance of style – this is its hallmark.
A range of vermouth is also produced.
Trevannion 2013
The Trevannion is the richest and most aromatic wine in the range. Siegerrebe in particular, reaches very high levels of ripeness, and gives the highly perfumed aromatics to the blend.
Mena Hweg 2013
This wine is inspired by the great wines of Germany, particularly the Mosel’s Kabinett and Spätlese styles. Because of the wines low alcohol and due to the sometimes peculiar PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) rules of the UK/EU Knightor are unable to refer to the grape type on the label.
Madeleine Angevine 2013
The Madeleine Angevine was gently whole-bunch pressed and cool fermented, before early bottling to retain freshness and primary fruit characters. It is an elegant wine with delicate floral aromas, reminiscent of gooseberry and elderflower and has a light refreshing palate.
Pinot Gris 2011
As a wine, it is elegant, restrained and in many ways ‘unshowy’, though it has a certain drive that attests to good fruit quality and a subtly robust character that will see the wine unravel and open up over time.
Carpe Diem 2014 White
“Seize the day”, is a Latin aphorism that makes us remember how ephemeral we are and is a fitting name for this young fresh harvest wines. Huxelrebe, Bacchus, Reichensteiner, Chardonnay were fermented cool, in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and fruit characters. The blend shows great balance with good fruit intensity of medlars, white plums and fresh grapes that express the perfect ripeness obtained in vintage 2014.
Portscatho Bacchus 2014
This Bacchus comes from a single vineyard on the Roseland Peninsula. It was picked on two separate dates in October, 10 days apart.
Bacchus 2013
Grapes were whole bunch pressed, with half of the juice fermenting in third fill French oak barrels to help build texture and structure, the remainder in stainless steel. Both batches were allowed to mature on lees for 6 months before blending and bottling.
Carpe Diem Rose
Carpe Diem Rose: “seize the day”, is a latin aphorism that make us remember how ephemeral we are and is a fitting name for this young fresh harvest wine. Cold maceration and a touch of oak add complexity and intensity to this blend.
Roseland Pinot Precoce
This single vineyard Pinot Rose is the fullest most fruit forward of Knightor’s Roses. It is a salmon pink colour, typical of Pinot based Rose wines with a nose full of ripe red summer fruit characters. The palate continues along similar lines with rich flavours of cherry, redcurrant and blackberry.
Portscatho Bacchus 2014
The [philophisy/idea] behind this Bacchus is to allow both the purity of varietal and the single vineyard at Portscatho to express itself to the full.
Sparkling NV Rose
This fruit forward rose is made from a blend of Knightor’s best Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, by the traditional method with secondary fermentation in bottle. On the nose it is delicate and fresh with gentle, fruity raspberry aromas, Delicious red berry fruit flavours, followed by a refreshing zingy citrus finish, are accentuated by a delicate creamy mousse
Knightor Brut NV Sparkling
This wine is about pure fun and enjoyment. On the nose it is elegant, with light floral aromas, peach and apple like fruit, and subtle lees notes. Despite the dosage being at the Brut level, it also has plenty of fruit flavour which along with it’s vibrant and fresh mousse makes for a fuller more jovial style.
